The Research and Innovation Division is seeking applications from experienced and motivated candidates for the post of Research Contracts Officer. You will support the Contracts and Research Managers in drafting and negotiating complex contracts for research or other activities and where appropriate lead on various strands/pieces of work. You will be expected to work as part of a team to actively manage UEA’s contracts process to ensure the highest quality of support is provided. To facilitate these outcomes, you will assist in the development and linkage of various University systems, processes and training programmes.
 
The successful candidate will have a degree or equivalent qualification, as well as previous experience of intellectual property management and be able to fulfil all essential elements of the person specification.
 
This full-time post is available immediately for a fixed term period of 24 months.

Applications are invited for the post of Researcher in Physical Oceanography to undertake research into ocean processes in the Amundsen Sea, Antarctica.  You will work with Professor Karen Heywood and Dr Rob Hall on the ERC-funded COMPASS project and the NSF-NERC-funded TARSAN project, a joint project between oceanographers and glaciologists to understand the behaviours of ice shelves, as part of the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration (ITGC).
 
You will investigate the oceanographic drivers of the basal melting of the Thwaites, Dotson and Getz ice shelves in the southern Amundsen Sea. Depending on your research interests, your analyses might exploit any or all of the following unique and exciting data sets collected during COMPASS and TARSAN:
  • Surveys of hydrographic properties, current velocity and turbulent mixing obtained under Dotson ice shelf from Autosub Long Range.
  • Ocean glider and ship-based hydrographic surveys across the Amundsen Sea and in front of Dotson and Getz ice shelves.
  • Moored time series beneath Thwaites ice shelf and in the Amundsen Sea.
  • Three years of seasonal hydrography from tagged seals in the Amundsen Sea.
You will collaborate with TARSAN and COMPASS colleagues in various US and UK institutions, and the University of Gothenburg. You will also collaborate with a biogeochemical counterpart to TARSAN, the ARTEMIS project. These international collaborations, together with the networking and early career scientist support provided by ITGC, offer an excellent opportunity to further develop your career. Although the data collection phases of TARSAN and COMPASS are now nearing completion, you will have the option to join UEA’s ocean glider group and gain skills in operating and piloting the UEA Seaglider fleet.
 
You should have, or soon to be awarded, a PhD in physical oceanography (or equivalent independent research experience) and have led publications in scientific journals. You should have excellent communication skills and have presented results at conferences. 
 
This full-time post is available from 1 May 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter, for a fixed term period up to 32 months, must end 31 December 2025.

Purpose of Role

To design, engineer, integrate & deliver, from concept to production, high voltage battery electrical systems, ensuring that they fulfil all the programme requirements (cost, timing, performance / function / attributes).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Detailed ESS knowledge and experience
  •  Ensure electrical system meets the ESS requirements including component selection
  • Ownership and delivery of low voltage and high voltage architecture of the ESS
  • Responsible for electrical system DFMEA and DVP (component and system level)
  • Responsible for any root cause analysis activity related to electrical systems
  • Ownership of electrical system and subcomponents (including LV & HV wiring) technical specification
  • BMS interface alignment (shut off concept, current, voltage, temperature sensing, pump, contactor, etc.)
  • Support purchasing activity related to electrical system components. Technical point of contact with the supplier
  •  Support ESS attribute delivery, managing releases, DVPs, DFMEAs
  •  Support ESS assembly planning and allocation
  • Support design-focused vehicle level meetings for ESS integration

Principal Accountabilities

  • Guarantee ESS delivery to all vehicle projects – to specification, on time and on budget
  • Understand and support the package constraints for the ESS. Work with ESS suppliers, McLaren Concept team & Digital Mock-Up team (DMU), Dimensional Management team (DM) and other Engineering teams to ensure programme specific ESS meet technical and package targets
  • Collaborate with the Engineering Manager/Principal Engineer of ESS, Chief Engineers and the Head of Engineering to deliver innovation in ESS technologies that are aligned with the ESS Technology Roadmap and produce vehicle project-relevant results
  • Working within, and influence, the Vehicle Programme & Engineering Management teams to ensure that the Electric Drive, within the propulsion department, responsibilities collectively deliver the whole vehicle targets
  • Work in collaboration with the ESS designer engineers to deliver detailed designs on time, to predetermined quality, cost and weight targets, within Design for Manufacture (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) constraints
  • Work with the designers and suppliers to achieve efficient, innovative and lightweight designs
  • Ensure design solutions deliver systems that meet attribute targets such as NVH, thermal, durability, performance (power, emissions, and response)
  • Ensure the ESS electrical system components interface seamlessly to the wider car including structural interfaces, electrical distribution system, cooling components & body panels
  • Works with Supply Chain Management to ensure delivery of the ESS on schedule for all phases of prototype, pilot, pre-production and production build
  • Prepare and present material to support external and internal project status reviews
  • Undertake ESS technical risk management to ensure project delivery, optimised vehicle performance and delivery of electric drive system attributes
  • Guarantee ESS ownership and delivery to the specific vehicle programme requirements including:
  • Electrical system and subsystem specifications which specify integration requirements for ESS with other Electric Drive System (EDS) components and vehicle systems
  • Lead electrical system FMEA and DVP, and support Electric Drive System FMEA and DVP. Support Vehicle / Electric Drive System level test specifications
  • Support line-management to define ESS development budgets & expenditure
  • ESS planning, timing & delivery including design, release, Engineering Records (ERs) in line with ETRS requirements, development and validation plans
  • ESS BOM management & tracking
  • Robust resolution of engineering concerns
  • Ensure support of vehicle build & development for ESS
  • Deliver ESS for all projects in line with MDP (McLaren Development Process) and ensure that Project Management KPIs are on track

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • A high level of technical knowledge and experience of HV electrical architecture and electrical components
  • A high level of technical knowledge and experience of ESS design, test & production delivery
  • Detailed understanding of Li-Ion technologies, Ultra/Supercapacitor storage solutions, BMS, Functional Safety and High Voltage Switchgear design
  • Experience in Mechanical, Electrical and Thermal ESS design, packaging & release
  • Experience in the behaviour and characterisation of electro-chemical cells
  • Experience in CATIA V5 2D/3D skills with good GD&T application experience
  • Integration of ESS embedded systems such as Battery Management System (BMS)
  • Experience in cell, module and pack testing to facilitate data gathering and analysis
  • Experience of testing with HiL (Hardware in the Loop) and Rig systems to prove integration of electric drive systems and other sub-systems.
  • Experience of delivering DVP, FMEA and DFM for ESS
  • Experience of control-system software-flashing, data recording/viewing and calibration tools
  • PC literate and at ease with MS Office products
  • Experienced in OEM or tier one component delivery
